Too many good singers are ignored due to facial/physical appearance, poor marketing and even poorer record promotion.

I am not in the music business, but I’ve been a huge fan of a variety of recording artists and musical genres practically all my life. I have heard great songs by people who have what some might call “average looks” and little or no sex appeal, but the song quality, music arrangement/production and that “voice” was I ever needed to enjoy their music. I listened to a radio discussion on this very topic several years ago, and one of the guests acknowledged that even a great singer like the late Luther Vandross (a regular-looking type guy with ongoing weight issues) would have had problems in today’s music world. I think it’s a shame that today’s music industry could make someone think this way because as a singer… “Lutha” was and still is awesome!

It seems all you need to be a star are good looks, a sexy body, minimal vocal and song styling skills, a producer who specializes in auto-tune and you’re ready to go. Let’s not forget the person(s) who is willing to finance, record and promote what they see as a good investment. They know they can capitalize off the millions of superficial, gullible and impressionable minds out there who believe anything a record company calls music and real talent… is “music and real talent.” I would rather listen to that passionate, creative, average looking singer or band that really knows their craft in terms of basic music theory, some level of actual vocal training, sensible lyrics, progressive chords and real musicians who play real instruments!

I honestly and literally thank God for the many great singers, musicians and yes a few (very few) rappers who relied on their talent, skills and artistry to make in the music business and who actually gave us great songs to remember. I like some of the music out here now, but I just don’t hear as much of the quality among the genres that has the longevity factor. I have this thing in my head that says “a good song is like a good plate of soul food… it just sticks to your ribs.”

Peace y’all and thanks for reading my post.
