The newly elected prime minister of Iraq is Mustafa Al-Kadhimi. Kadhimi was once the country's intelligence chief. He is known to have been a journalist at the beginning of his career.

After a long six-month stalemate, a new government has finally been formed in Iraq. The country's parliament appointed a new prime minister at 12 o'clock midnight on Wednesday (May 6th).

Inaugurated, the new prime minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, said the biggest challenge for the new government was tackling the coronavirus and addressing the protests.

The cabinet, led by Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, won a vote of confidence in Iraq's parliament. As a result, the country's six-month stalemate over the prime ministerial election has come to an end.

The vote was scheduled to be held at 9 pm on Wednesday, but it was postponed to 12 pm due to differences among various groups in the parliament.

The session was attended by 329 lawmakers, of whom 233 supported Mustafa Al-Kadhimi's cabinet.

After Adil Abdul-Mahdi stepped down as prime minister on November 29, 2019, the election of a new prime minister has divided Iraq's political parties in recent months. During this time, some people were given the opportunity to form a cabinet, but in the end, they lost by a vote of confidence.

Then, on April 9, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi was given the responsibility of forming the cabinet. After a series of meetings with political parties, he presented a list of ministers in Parliament.
